In Kyle Stedman’s article, Annoying Way People Use Sources, he uses an example of a driver hitting an armadillo. He states that most passengers would state, “it came out of nowhere.” Writers need to be wary of just putting quotes in their essay with no back story. Let’s look at some incidences where no prompting can go wrong.
Example 1: The First Date
Imagine if you were on a date. You guys are talking about family and you immediately go in for the kiss without a warning. Now this is risky. Not giving any warning like a slight lean in or leading up with a statement may have the girl freak out and hit you. Let’s just say your classmates will also be so shell shocked about you not introducing a quote after reading this article they may hit the person next to them.
Now let’s look at Some Example of Someone not introducing a quote. Please note that these quotes are made up and are not accurate, but here to give a reader an idea of what’s going on.
Example:
I have a dog who is a gold retriever. His hips started hurting when he was three years old. “Dogs develop hip problems early on because of genetics.”
In my writing, I find it hard to integrate quotes into my paragraphs. I sometimes leave the quotation without any explanation before it. I really am trying to look for it when I read through my papers.
How to Correct
1) Introduce who the author is
2) And why it is important to the idea previously mentioned
Corrected Example:
I have a dog who is a golden retriever. His hips started hurting when he was three years old. The Humane Society have collecting date why golden can develop hip problems at a young age. Bridget Holloman, a vet at University of Chicago, stated, ““Dogs develop hip problems early on because of genetics.”
Which Annoyances are the Most Annoying in my Eyes?
1) Am I in the Right Movie?
2) Armadillo Roadkill
3) Dating Spiderman
4) Uncle Barry and His Encyclopedia of Useless Information
5) I swear I did Some Research
Which Annoyances are the Most Annoying for an Editor?
1) I swear I did Some Research
2) Am I in the right movie?
3) Armadillo Road Kill
4) Uncle Barry and His Encyclopedia of Useless Information
5) Dating Spiderman
I believe editors would be annoyed with someone not citing their quotes right. It makes it harder to check.
