In the beginning of Brian’s podcast, I was thrown by the comical tone he uses. However, it works well when discussing something so sad and personal with the viewers. It was a way for people to let their guard down to talk about something. A few times it made me mad because some of the comments he made were not properly placed. There is a time and place for everything as my mom would say.
A similarity this podcast has with our paper is putting our personal story within our work to describe a community that he was in. In his case, it was the community of people who have attempted suicide and have watched others try to commit suicide. The difference between his podcast and our paper is there wasn’t a lot of research. In addition, he was doing a funnier less serious tone for his podcast.
In terms of the policy of the caller should ask if they need help, I am conflicted. The person who really wants to leave the world behind, but called to talk, clearly wants someone to help them and those few seconds are crucial to saving their life. However, I understand why you would ask. This is a delicate personal decision and when they arrive they need to be safe too. People who don’t want help may hurt themselves or others. Suicide is a hard concept to grasp and hard to prevent.
